Lessons in Small Business Ownership
11:35 PM Edit This 2 Comments »#1. As I remind myself often, in many other areas of my life, and anyone who will listen to my gratuitous free advice:
Keep Moving Forward, Even When It Feels Like You Are Standing Still.
It dawned on us (and by us, I mean Rick) that with the housing market as unstable as it is these days, one must have a Plan B in this business. Flipping houses can be great on the wallet, but there are times when you look into your purse and wonder what happened.
So... *Brilliant Idea #47 of my dear husband: Start an adjacent business to real estate investment - Property Management! Now, no one ever wants to deal with tenants. They think they own the place, they think up crazy wild stories of why they can't pay the rent on time. And no one wants to deal with owners either. They send family members to the house to "check on it", they blame you when the tenant doesn't pay the rent on time. But the idea is brilliant nonetheless. With so many people loosing their houses for one reason or another, there are massively increasing numbers of families who require rentals. With so many people foreclosing, there are more and more who can no longer BUY. Which is one of the problems of getting our houses to sell right now. And those who can are waiting... waiting for signs that it is okay to buy- signs that will never come unless they actually start BUYING. The ones who are buying the auctions houses? Investors. Investors who needs Property Managers to deal with the tenants because they don't want to.
Enter the MacDonalds. The Property Managers. Pushing forward into a new enterprise.
*Please note: Normally I tend to be a sarcastic person, but I, in no way, intend any sarcasm in the statement. He is actually quite brilliant.

Good luck with the property management!
Did you like how I redundantly used the terms "gratuitous" and "free" together?
