White Out

I adore the non-color white. If I could, I'd do an entire house in white. It would be super impracticable. Especially with 3 dogs. Unless they were all white. Here are a few examples of decor and design using white that I got all tickled white about. ;)

I am in love with this blog I found. They refinish anything you have and they are in Chandler!! They specialize in a European Paint finish that makes the piece of furniture look like it was painted... a looong time ago. Slightly rustic, slightly distressed, slightly shabby chic. Now I just need to find a special piece to have them refinish it for me!

Here's some of my favorites:

A Whole New World

I am in a new growth phase in my life. One that I truly never thought I'd be in- never anticipated, never expected, and really never desired. I am referring to, of course, my growth in the realm of small business. This venture of ours is not a new announcement. I've written about it here and will tell just about anybody who will listen about starting the property management business. The entire expereince has made me use skills I never knew were there and pushed me out of my I'll-let-somebody-else-worry-about-that comfort zone.

I AM IN A WHOLE NEW WORLD. We started with the Operating Agreement. Because we are not Real Estate Brokers, we need to start this company within another Agency, and we have been fortunate enough to be at an agency that 1) doesn't already have a property management division, 2) wants to have a property management division, and 3) doesn't want to do the work themselves. Well, Rick pretty much handled getting the Operating Agreement in line. I only had to sign my name. But I DID do the research and opened our bank accounts. And, although signing my name to such a serious document felt rather monumental, I have actually signed my name before. And I have opened a bank account before, although never with 5 people on the same accounts. Those things haven't really stretched me at all.

Setting up the accounts for E-pay and Credit Checks has made me grow some. This process of setting up the E-pay has been a royal pain in the ass. We have an on-line system that allows us to track all of our tenants, the owner's of the houses, money and accounts, maintenance of the properties... everything. Well, part of that is supposed to allow tenants to pay their rent online. Makes it easier for them. Makes it easier for us. However, to get it set up is quite the ordeal. The application process that I received took me an entire week just to complete. I needed every type of verification possible to prove we were a real entity. Understandable. I also needed every type of verification on EACH of the five people who have access to funds. Also understandable. And hypothetically should be easy enough to do. Except when you are working with 4 other individuals who don't have their heads in this part of the process and aren't too speedy in giving me something as simple as their social security number and home address. Geesh. So I receive the information I requested, complete the plethora of applications, gather the necessary documents. And I submit. Then I wait.... and I wait... and I wait. I send an email attempting to verify that all of my hard work was received. And I wait... and wait some more... I send another. And another. I am getting very frustrated. Then I receive news that I am not lost in a sea of applications... only to find out that the application paperwork that I spent a week on is OUTDATED. Yep. It is outdated, and I am being forwarded on to someone who can help me. Great. Three days later I get the REAL application. It wasn't nearly so bad. About a 1/4 of the stack of paper for the old one. And I submit. No response for three days, and I email. Did you receive my shit??? Response: Not that I am aware of. You have got to be kidding me. I resend and the person who is supposed to be assisting me gets it, but he is, alas, out of town and cannot process it until Tuesday. Fantastic. Cuz I need another delay. In the meantime I have people complaining to me and wondering what I am doing that this is not set up yet. Because, heaven forbid, they should have the tenant drop a check off at the office. Today I have received additional papers to fill out. We shall see how long it takes me to complete this, because half the stuff it is asking for, we don't have yet. Great.

That is the E-pay. Setting up the account with the Credit screening place was not nearly so dramatic, but still had its' frustrations. After my hard work I can proudly say I can get your credit score within 30 seconds!

These steps in establishing our business may seem minor to some with more expertise. But to me it is something to be proud of. I never thought I'd own my own business (well, co-own), let alone be an integral part of establishing it. I am sure I will look back one day and read this blog and laugh at how silly I was. But for now I will be proud. :)

Liar.

This is a quote I wrote down from somewhere. I have no idea what it is from... a movie for sure, but which? Couldn't tell you.

"Yes, it is terribly simple. The good guys are always stalworth and true. The bad guys are always distinguished by their pointy horns and black hats. And we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies and everybody lives happily ever after.
"Liar."

Heart 2 Hand

My sorority does a Heart 2 Hand gift every year. We draw names and make a homemade gift for the person whose name we drew. This is what made this year for my Heart 2 Hand gift for Kat:
First I created the pink stripes at the top and bottom of the glass. I carefully measured equally distanced black lines and painted in the pink. Next I painted the circle and scallops surrounding it. I used a zebra stencil, loosely taped inside the glass, to paint the zebra stripes. After painting in the circle pink and then the letter "K" I had to set the paint in the oven. After it cooled I added the Swarovski crystals in the scallops. It turned out great, but the only thing I did not like was that the paint strokes created texture. I was hoping the paint would be smooth instead of bumpy.
The entire process took a lot longer than I anticipated, I admit. I attribute that to 1) it being the first time I had ever attempted this type of project, and 2) I am a bit of a perfectionist with my projects and spent way more time than necessary making my lines perfect. I would definitely do this one again. Especially after everyone's reactions. At first they did not even think it was hand made! What a massive compliment to a perfectionist. Part of feeds my ego, I admit it's true. But really the biggest part was seeing in her face how much she loved it. I get such a HUGE kick out of giving a gift that someone truly loves. Especially when I get to make it myself.

Cherry Inspiring

MY friends recently threw a baby shower for another friend of ours that was cherry themed. It was adorable. I happened upon a blog shortly after of another cherry themed baby shower. I am sensing a trend here! So I did some googling to find other cheery cherry parties.

Chicken Pot... Muffin?

10:02 PM Edit This 0 Comments »

I created a yum-yum-yummy new dish!! Tired of the tried and true chicken pot pie, I decided to put a spin on it by using a muffin pan.

To start with, I made shredded chicken the day prior. I used 2 bone-in chicken breasts (including the skin) and 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts. I did it this way because using the bone and fat (skin) will give it more flavor. Both I also wanted more meat so I added the boneless skinless. In my crock pot I laid down a couple of carrots and celery stalks, as well as a couple of bay leafs and herbs. I covered it with store-bought chicken stock, water and threw in a couple crushed up chicken bouillon cubes. Added pepper and a little bit of salt. Lately I have been using less salt in my cooking - because you can always add more but you cannot take away!!

Let it sit in the crock pot on low for about 8 hours or so. chicken will be falling off the bone. Remove the chicken breasts and separate any loose pieces from the juice. Remove any bones, skin, fat, vegetables from your chicken.Shred the chicken. Or, if you like, cut it into cubes. It's up to you. Strain the juice and save - it will be the best broth for chicken noodle soup. Another use for all your chicken!

Okay, now you have awesome chicken. Next step: pot pie filling. Make a roux: http://www.ehow.com/how_5159053_make-sauce-roux-butter-flour.html Roux will be kind of like a paste. You add stock or milk to make it a creamy sauce. I used some half & half. Yeah, I know... high in calories. Add just enough to make the desired consistency. But remember: Your sauce will thicken as it cools (while adding the other ingredients and making the crusts).

Add to your roux: diced and slightly under cooked potatoes and carrots, peas (I like to use the frozen ones with the little pearl onions), parsley or other herbs that you like, slightly sauteed celery, and of course the chicken. Pepper it. You will need to experiment on how much of the ingredients you use so it doesn't get too thick. If you have too many ingredients and not enough sauce, you can always add a can of Cream of Chicken or Cream of Mushroom. Actually, the Cream of Mushroom adds a really nice flavor.

Now you will want to make your crusts. I just use Pillsbury pie crust for my pot pies. I am not a pastry person so I cheat on this step. The packaged crust comes a little thick for muffin pans, so I rolled mine out a bit.

Use something (like a cup) and cut out circles. Fill the pan with the circles. Even though the store-bought pie crusts are formed for a regular pie, you can roll out you straps to cut out more little circles.
Spoon in the chicken filling and cover your mini pot pie with crust. I ran out of dough, so I had to use scraps for the remaining few. My food may not always look good, but it always tastes great!! Bake in oven... 400 degrees for about 45 minutes. Or do as I always do... until it looks done! I think I used slightly less time because muffins are smaller than pies. The good thing about pot pies is that the ingredients are already cooked!!

Bon appetit!

Spring Cleaning March

7:23 PM Edit This 1 Comment »
I decided that the month of March is now National (and by national I mean the Nation of Gena) Spring Cleaning Month. Each and every day I will do some sort of special cleaning, i.e. not that regular maintenance cleaning, and/or organization.
Today I scrubbed the white dog gate and scrubbed the kitchen garbage cans. It may not sound like a lot, but it was accompanied with regular cleaning such as: putting away clean dishes and washing dirty ones, and scrubbing the kitchen sink as well as the rest of the kitchen.
Tomorrow: I will put a good hour, at least, into organizing my horridly messy office.
